Saiyan vs Pikachu RS3
How did we come up with the idea of this wrap design? Find out in the design review below.
Once we received a commission for a wrap design from a client Robin Heinrich with this concept:
"As discussed, I would like to have you design a digital print for my Audi RS3 8V Sportback Facelift built in 03/2018.
Attached you will find sample images of the desired motifs and pictures of the car.
It would be great if you could combine the Super Saiyan's energy with Pikachu's thunderbolt (perhaps in the form of a battle).
The Poke Balls and the Dragon Balls could appear somewhat scattered in the motifs.
The Super Saiyan and Pikachu should therefore appear several times around the car. It can be wild and playful.
As discussed, the driver and passenger sides should look different.
I look forward to your suggestions and if you need anything else, I can be reached at this e-mail address."
The customer attached some visual references in the email to create a specific and unusual design.
A plain and simple design brief is essential.
Why do we always start with a design brief?
A perfect wrap design doesn’t start in Adobe Illustrator. It starts with clarity.
Before we draw a single line, we define:
- Purpose
- Style
- Colour matching
- Mandatory elements
- Production details
Whether you are a private client or a wrap studio, a clear design brief means fewer corrections, better results, and a strong identity.
The customer also attached photos of his Audi:
Details, price and deadline were approved. We began creating a black-and-white design sketch and vectorizing Audi's technical drawing in Adobe Illustrator to scale.
Why do we do the vectorization in Adobe Illustrator rather than in Adobe Photoshop?
Because later we prepare files for digital printing using Illustrator. It is easier for us.
So, we made three different concepts which were sent to the client for approval.
In a few days we received the client's answer and started vectorization of the main characters in Adobe Illustrator.
Then, three different concepts of the overall design were sent to the client.
Here are the main techniques used to convey dynamism in such an image:
- Diagonals and curved lines — create a sense of movement and direction.
- Contrast between warm (yellow) and cool (blue) tones — a visual "push" that amplifies energy.
- Lightning bolts and energy rays — clearly directional elements that guide the eye.
- Motion blur effects — simulate speed.
- Radial bursts and flashes at the point of impact — provide a focal point and a sense of impulse.
- Particles and fragments (balls, sparks) — create a feeling of scattering and chaos.
- Silhouettes and foreshortening — add depth and enhance dynamic poses.
- Rich gradients and vivid highlights — give volume and metallic sheen in motion.
- Rim lighting and strong shadows — emphasize form and contrast.
- Repetition of rhythmic elements — establishes tempo and visual inertia.
- A compositional center of conflict — concentrates energy and makes the scene dramatic.
Combined, these techniques turn a static car into a "moment of action," making the image feel alive and tense.
The customer was thrilled and confirmed the design. After approving the final design visualization for all sides.
An explosive Super Saiyan aura meets Pikachu’s crackling lightning — golden and blue streams create a dynamic clash of light and motion.
The illustrations are rendered in a glossy, kinetic style with vivid gradients, strong highlights, and motion blur effects — visually rich and perfect for the track.
We began preparing all the files for digital printing. There were many details involved and they had to be agreed upon with the client.
When transitioning certain design elements from one panel to another (for example, the hood and front fenders, or the bumper and quarter panel) so they all fit together, we use calculations from the vehicle’s original drawings and sometimes ask clients to send additional measurements.
After sending the printing files, the project could be considered done. We also decided to make some 3D renders as we wanted to see how the project was going to look in real life.
After a while, we received photos of a finished project from the client. Looks really impressive, right?
A professional wrap design is not guessing. It is a structured creative process.
